ABOUT PRESIDENT’S READING CIRCLE
Welcome to President’s Reading Circle – Let the Nation Read – a virtual book club that is destined to make a real difference in the lives of millions of South Africans, in our economy and in our interaction with the global community.
In the spirit of Thuma Mina, President’s Reading Circle answers the call by a champion reader, published author and President of the Republic, Cyril Ramaphosa, for South Africans to experience and lived the joy of reading.
President Ramaphosa has consistently urged the nation to cultivate a love of books and reading that will open our minds and hearts to new ideas and unlock opportunities that flow from a broadened understanding of the country and the world around us.
President’s Reading Circle brings together (National Education Collaboration Trust (NECT), National Reading Coalition (NRC), Department of Basic Education (DBE), Read to Lead, National Library of South African (NLSA), Department of Arts and Culture (DAC), Government Communication and Information System (GCIS), National Development Plan (NDP)) in a social initiative that is intended to change lives and transform our society.
From the rating of learners’ reading skills in international assessments to book sales volumes – 5 000 sales make a bestseller – South Africa has a great deal to do to expand reading for function, for self-education and self-improvement, and for pleasure.
At the same time, we are witnessing the emergence of a new generation of writers who are narrating the story of a 21st century South Africa through diverse storylines that reflect a rapidly transforming society.
Through increased access to education, new generations of readers are emerging as well, presenting new audiences and markets but, more importantly, broadened insights and the openness and tolerance that flows from turning page after page.
President’s Reading Circle is a home for passionate, veteran readers and those who are in the first thralls of their exploration with words and ideas.
This is where we share current and past reads; where we compliment and critique writers and their readers, and where we engage with seriousness and fun for the sake of building a community around reading and all it inspires.
