This #MandelaMonth, the National Reading Coalition (NRC) launched a book drive activation by donating to 10 schools, ‘mini library on wheels’ filled with 300 Home Languages and 50 English Books across three provinces equipped with 300 indigenous languages and 50 English books.

The initiative is designed to leverage off the celebrations and grow the #ReadingRevolutionby addressing the reading challenge through providing NRC selected schools access to age – appropriate books. This also addresses one of the value chain areas of the coalition – Access To Relevant Reading Material.

The first stop, in the 2 -week activation was Ditheku Primary School on Mandela Day, in Marapong, Lephalale. The school has 1 385 learners, although established in 2012, has a shortage of Sepedi reading material which will be partly addressed by the library on wheels donated by the NRC.
Through a collaboration with Siyafunda – Donate a Book, a reading NGO based in Gauteng, “library on wheels” were built using industrial bins and added book shelves.

This activation was received well by learners, teachers and the Principal Mpho Francina expressed her gratitude and said “This means so much to our school. All reading material provided by the coalition will help us better equip our learners to become better learners”. Our next stop in growing the #ReadingRevolution is N’wa – Xindzhele Primary School located in Dan, Nkowankowa, Limpopo.
